Dr Ann O’Neill WA Australian of the Year 2011 Finalist
In 1994, Dr Ann O’Neill’s estranged husband broke into her home, shooting Ann, then her two children, before turning the gun on himself. Ann was the only survivor. Only months before they died she had promised them that she would return to education in order to build a better life for them all. Ann has recently completed her PhD, with her ground-breaking dissertation researching the social support for secondary victims of serious crime. Ann has pursued a career in social work and co-founded angelhands, a community organisation dedicated to victims of serious crime.
Linda Wayman General Manager of Austereo, Perth
Linda Wayman is a noted business executive who began her career as a cadet Journalist on The West Australian newspaper. Linda’s path to the position of General Manager has included a variety of roles across Australia including public affairs, marketing, public relations, government, event management, business development and administration. She holds a Masters Degree and in recognition of her business and personal contributions, Linda was awarded Telstra Business Woman of the Year (WA) in 2003.
Alex Cassie (’04) Director of Search For Your Rights
In late 2009, Alex Cassie founded Search For Your Rights in response to the proposed ‘stop and search’ laws. Search For Your Rights is a non-partisan public action group dedicated to raising awareness of civil rights issues in WA that now has over 2400 members. A graduate of MLC (’04), Alex has a double degree in Marine Biology and Modern History from UWA and is currently completing her History Honours.
Julie Shuttleworth General Manager for Barrick Gold
In the last 17 years, Julie Shuttleworth’s career in the mining industry has provided the opportunity to travel to over 70 countries including Australia, China and Tanzania. Julie has made extraordinary ground in a largely male-dominated industry. In 2009, Julie became a General Manager for Barrick in Tanzania and is currently General Manager at Barrick’s Granny Smith Mine in Western Australia. In 2007, Julie received the Telstra WA Young Businesswoman of the Year award.
